Hindu Youth detained in Sunamganj over alleged derogatory remarks on prophet
[The New Age] The police detained a young man in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj on Monday afternoon for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on social media.
The detainee was identified as Kripesh Chandra Roy, 35, a resident of Tahirpur upazila, police said.
Additional superintendent of police (Crime and Operations) for Sunamganj district, Rakinul Hasan Rasel, confirmed the detention.
He told New Age that police brought the man to Tahirpur police station at about 2:30pm on Monday following growing tension among local residents over a post published on a Facebook account bearing his name.
The police officer said the accused man had filed a general diary with Tahirpur police station on Sunday night, claiming that the Facebook profile used to make the post was fake.
In his complaint, Kripesh alleged that an unknown individual had created a fraudulent account using his name and photos of his family without their consent to publish misleading posts aimed at inciting communal tension.
‘Kripesh also sought legal action over the alleged misuse of his and his family’s photographs,’ the ASP said.
The police officer added that law enforcement officers took Kripesh into protective custody after the post generated widespread discussion and anger among local villagers on Monday afternoon.
‘Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area, and the situation remains calm,’ the officer said in the evening.
He added that efforts were underway to produce the detainee before a judicial magistrate’s court following standard legal procedure.
‘Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the Facebook post and investigating the man’s claim that a fake account was used to publish it,’ the ASP added.
