Hindu Gold Merchant Hacked, Robbed of Silver, Gold and Cash
Desk Report || A Hindu gold merchant and his son were allegedly attacked with sharp weapons and robbed of silver, gold, and cash in the Bharariya union of Manikganj Sadar upazila. The attackers fired a round into the air before fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Friday (August 14) on the road beside the Lokenath Temple in Purba Shanbanda Palpara.
The injured gold merchant, Patit Prabanshil (73), is the son of Priyanath Shil of the Purba Shanbanda area and runs a gold business at Purba Shanbanda Bazar. His son, Probir Kumar Shil (32), who was with him at the time, was also injured. Manoranjan Pal (50), a local resident who came to help them, was injured as well.
According to local and police sources, the father and son were returning home after closing their shop at the bazaar when several robbers blocked their path on the road near the Lokenath Temple. The attackers assaulted them with sharp weapons and made off with approximately 50–60 bhori of silver, gold nose-pins weighing two anas, and 85,000 taka in cash. While fleeing, the robbers fired one round from a firearm, though no one was injured by the gunshot.
Police have launched an investigation to identify those involved in the robbery and the attack on the victims.
Md. Monir Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Manikganj Sadar Police Station, said police inspected the crime scene. Initial investigation suggests it was a robbery, and the victim was struck with a heavy object. He confirmed no one was hurt by the gunfire, though locals reported hearing the shot. Legal action is being taken based on the investigation. All three injured persons have been sent to Manikganj Sadar Hospital for initial treatment.
