Daily Star | An eight-member delegation representing minority communities met BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman at the party's Gulshan office last night.
The meeting, which lasted nearly an hour, focused on what the delegation described as a rise in violence in different parts of the country.
During the meeting, minority leaders presented Tarique with a detailed account of recent incidents and submitted an eight-point list of demands, urging the BNP to include them as formal commitments in its election manifesto, sources said.
In response, Tarique said restoring law and order was essential to ensuring public safety and rebuilding democratic processes.
He said a functional democratic system was necessary to protect the rights of all citizens, regardless of religion or community.
Tarique also called for cooperation from minority leaders, saying political engagement and collective efforts were needed to address security concerns and safeguard minority rights.
Those present at the meeting included Puja Udjapan Parishad President Basudeb Dhar, General Secretary Santosh Sharma, Acting General Secretary of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council Manindra Kumar Nath, Presidium Member Kajal Debnath, Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, Dhakeshwari National Temple Managing Committee President Chitra Ranjan Majumdar, General Secretary DN Chatterjee, and Metropolitan Sarbojanin Puja Udjapan Committee General Secretary Tapas Chandra Paul.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was also present.
During the meeting, the minority leaders conveyed their condolences to Tarique Rahman over the death of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and handed over separate condolence messages.
